3rd round: Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M

Davis Mills was just plucked away, so I went ahead and selected Mond here who was available. There is not much separation between those two quarterbacks. Mills’ flaw is the lack of experience while Mond is the marginal improvement despite the experience (four-year starter).

Mond has a big-time arm with a knack at throwing his wide receivers open on anticipation throws. He shows a quick release and can deliver good placement on the ball. He is a dual-threat QB who is capable of operating zone-read. Outside the pocket, Mond is at his best although he is fully capable of standing in the pocket and going through his progressions.

The Bears have been doing homework on day two quarterbacks. While the fan base has been pushing for a trade-up for a quarterback, jumping from 20-to-the top 10 is almost unlikely.

Even if it is not a first-round draft pick, the Bears need to take shots at the position each year until they find that guy. Of the day two prospects both Mond and Mills provide the most upside.

With Andy Dalton cemented as “QB1”, Mond will have an opportunity to sit a year and learn behind an established vet.
