Chicago Cubs: Wild series with the Pittsburgh Pirates ends well
The Chicago Cubs got off to a rough start in their home opener. Kyle Hendricks didn’t look like himself which got the Cubs off to a 0-1 start. Since then, they have come back to win two and a row which caps off a big opening series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates are a bad team and everybody knows it but they still deserve respect as an MLB team. The Cubs took care of their business in a wild series.
The Chicago Cubs needed to get this season started off the right way.
The first win of the season came on Saturday night. It was Jake Arrieta’s first game in a Cubs uniform since his departure a few years ago. He isn’t the same pitcher that he was back then but he certainly looked like it in his first game back. The Cubs should be excited about what he can do for them this year. The team, organization, and fans certainly enjoy having this guy around.
On Sunday, Zach Davies made the first start of his Chicago Cubs tenure. He was acquired in the trade that sent Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres so there had to be some pressure. He was awesome and earned his first win. The Cubs are going to have a pretty good rotation this year if Arrieta and Davies stay consistent behind Kyle Hendricks.
One thing that is notable is the way some of the star players have bounced back. Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, and Kris Bryant were all subpar in 2020 and didn’t look great in the first game that resulted in a loss. Well, in games two and three they were a very productive trio. Each of them was able to hit the ball and create runs for the Cubs which is so important for their lineup.
The lineup is built around them and they need to play like this on most days. Bryant is the only one of the three who has his first home run of the season but those will come in bunches for the other two. Each of them now has multiple hits which is a good sign. In a contract year for all of them, it would be wise to have a good year.

Now the Cubs have a much tougher test ahead of them. Starting tonight they have a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew brings in a record of 1-2 but there isn’t really much of a sample size to go off of. It should be yet another fun series between the two.
