Chicago Bears Small School Draft Targets: OT Spencer Brown, Northern Iowa

The offensive line is far from set in Chicago. Right now, the Bears have only a couple of certainties. Cody Whitehair and James Daniels will be starters, but the question marks abound from there.

More from Da Windy City

Will Whitehair stay at center, or will Sam Mustipher take the starting center gig and thus slide Whitehair to guard? If that happens, the question marks become lessened quite a bit. Charles Leno would be the presumed starter at left tackle still, but the Bears should definitely add competition at the tackle position.

At right tackle, the Bears could opt to go with Germain Ifedi, whom they re-signed. But, Ifedi operates better as a guard.

Spencer Brown would erase the question marks at right tackle, and he wouldn’t cost a first or second rounder. Brown will likely go between the third and fourth rounds.

The Northern Iowa product is one of the better tackles in the draft, but because he played against smaller school competition, he’s going to have to prove himself.

Brown is an aggressive player and plays very physical. He’s got that “nasty disposition” you read about in linemen scouting reports often. Standing 6-foot-8, Brown is a towering human being. Because of his height, his lateral mobility is limited just a bit. But, he packs a punch and has tremendous length.

He would likely come in and start at right tackle immediately, even though the Bears wouldn’t be spending more than a third-round pick. Brown would allow the Bears to target other important positions like quarterback and wide receiver in the first couple of rounds, which is a win.
