There is a free agent option available to the Chicago White Sox that would not only provide them with an offensive replacement for Eloy Jimenez’s injured bat but also represent a defensive upgrade. That free agent is none other than Yasiel Puig.

Puig did not play during the 2020 season as of right before he finalized his contract with the Atlanta Braves, the veteran outfielder was diagnosed with COVID 19. Puig’s last full season in the majors was 2019 when he split the season between the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. During the 2019 season, Puig hit .267/.327/.458/.785 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs.

Unlike Cespedes, Puig would not be resigned to the designated hitter role. Puig still has the athletic ability to play left field at an above-average level. This would allow the White Sox to have Andrew Vaughn as the designated hitter.

Where the questions arise for Puig is his fit with the team. There were character concerns with Puig during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and those issues did surface during his time with the Reds and Indians during the 2019 season as well.

Not to mention, there has been speculation of a rift between White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu and Puig. This is also where we need to mention that is a sexual assault allegation facing Puig. A recent article from ESPN confirmed that MLB does have an investigation in progress:

"An MLB source confirmed that an investigator spoke to the woman. The source also said Puig has not been interviewed about the accusations because MLB typically does not approach a player until after conducting a thorough investigation. The case remains open, and the source said MLB investigators are waiting to see what details emerge from the lawsuit."

Hot. The Chicago Blackhawks are getting huge numbers from their goalie. light

Before the Chicago White Sox determines whether or not Puig is fit, there first is resolution needed on his off-the-field issues. If there is clarity and he is deemed available to play, then Puig would be an ideal candidate to replace Eloy Jimenez.
