Earlier this off-season, the Chicago White Sox attended a workout for free agent Yoenis Cespedes.

After missing the entire 2019 season with an injury, Cespedes only appeared in 8 games for the New York Mets in 2020 before opting out of the season due to COVID 19. In an attempt to showcase his talents for Major League Baseball teams, Cespedes worked out for teams earlier this month. Among the teams that attended the workout was the White Sox. By all accounts, Cespedes impressed.

"I could quote some of the scouts on site, except it would be more effective to express their general sentiments in a collective shrug, as many of them did, their shrugs meaning, “Yup, he’s still a physical wonder and somebody you can dream on.” -New York Post"

At this point in his career, and at the age of 35, Cespedes likely does not have the potential to be an everyday left fielder. Where Cespedes’ will have value to teams moving forward is on offense. For a team like the White Sox, Cespedes does make a ton of sense given the offense that needs to be replaced with Jimenez being injured.

Albeit that Cespedes only played 8 games during the 2020 season, the veteran proved that he still has power in his bat as he hit 2 home runs within that span of games. With Cespedes in place as the team’s designated hitter, that would allow the White Sox to continue their experiment with Andrew Vaughn in left field while allowing adding some much-needed power to their lineup in light of the Jimenez injury.

It’s possible that the White Sox may not want to put too much pressure on Vaughn during the 2021 season and only want him to focus on making the offensive adjustment at the Major League level as a designated hitter. If that is the case, there is another intriguing free agent that remains available:
