Chicago Bears 7-Round Mock Draft: A swing for the fences
By Ryan Heckman
In the second round, the Bears get right to work in helping protect their new franchise quarterback. Jalen Mayfield is looked at as a possible first-round pick, but as we all know, there are about 50-70 of those types depending on which outlets you listen to.
In this scenario, Mayfield was there at pick 52 overall for the Bears to scoop up. This is a tremendous value pick for Chicago, giving them a Day 1 starter to replace Bobby Massie on the right side. Chicago’s starting offensive line is now set with Charles Leno on the opposite side, Sam Mustipher taking over at center, Cody Whitehair sticking at guard and James Daniels returning to his role at guard.
Mayfield only started a few games in college, which is probably his biggest knock. But, he’s ready to roll as a pro. He has everything you want as a starting tackle in the NFL; just some minor polishing is all Mayfield needs.
Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing in around 320 pounds, Mayfield is a tank. He’s also a great athlete and can get out in front on tosses or sweeps if necessary. His initial step is quick and provides a burst, especially in the run game.
He could afford to add a bit of strength, although he plays mean. He wants to finish his opposing linemen. That’s just how he operates every snap.
