Chicago Bears Draft Prospects with Hometown Ties: CB Greg Newsome II
Hometown: Chicago, IL
One of the big-time risers over the past few weeks is a kid most Bears fans are familiar with, and he wouldn’t have to travel far after college if the Bears snagged him. Northwestern’s Greg Newsome II is now seen as one of the very best cornerbacks in the draft, and oh by the way, the Bears have a need there.
Letting go of Fuller hurt this team in a big way. Regardless of whether or not Trufant pans out on his 1-year deal, the Bears now must think about their future starter at the position.
Newsome had a ridiculous pro day and ran an unofficial 4.38 in his 40-yard dash. He definitely turned some heads, looking not only fast, but strong.
This is a 6-foot-1 corner who can step in and immediately be a starter in the NFL. He has tremendous length, making opposing receivers find it difficult not to have Newsome’s hands on the ball at some point during the catch process. Speaking of the catch process, Newsome only allowed a staggering 31.8 completion percentage last year.
Newsome is a pretty complete cornerback, being a willing tackler and supporter in the run game as well. He will go in the first round, no doubt.
If the Bears pass on Newsome in the first round, it wouldn’t be shocking due to their pressing needs elsewhere. Plus, they also have some options on Day 2 which could end up being strong values. But, if they drafted him with pick no. 20, it would be hard to argue Newsome being a bad pick.
