Chicago Bears Rumors: Kenny Golladay meets with team
The Chicago Bears officially introduced their new starting quarterback on Thursday in the form of Andy Dalton and it appears that they are determined to add some offensive weapons in order to assist Dalton in his efforts with the team.
The most talented offensive player on the Bears’ roster is wide receiver, Allen Robinson. The issue is that like Ross and Rachel on “Friends”, the Bears and Robinson are on a break. Let alone the fact that the Bears and Robinson have not had any contract negotiations since September, Robinson has made it clear that he has no intention of signing the franchise tag tender that the Bears applied on the wide receiver last week.
Looking beyond Robinson, the Bears’ offensive talent is bleak at best. David Montgomery took steps forward in 2020 towards being a productive starting running back. Other than that, the Bears have a running back in Tarik Cohen returning from an ACL injury, an aging tight end in Jimmy Graham, and a talented but still developing wide receiver in Darnell Mooney.
What about Anthony Miller? Other than Mitchell Trubisky, the other player that the Bears’ front office has been willing to throw under the bus this off-season has been Miller. Between his injury history and lack of discipline that often cost the Bears in games, it is clear that the team is ready to move on.
If that is the case, then how are the Bears determined to provide Dalton with help? Well, the help could come in the form of former Detroit Lions wide receiver Kenny Golladay.
Regardless of what the Bears decide to do with Miller, it is becoming clear that the team was going to need to address the wide receiver position this off-season. Golladay would certainly be an improvement to the Bears’ wide receiving core.
Injuries limited Golladay to only five games during the 2020 season with the Detroit Lions but the Lions’ 2017 third-round draft selection was trending towards becoming one of the top wide receivers in the league with his production during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. In 2019 alone, Golladay totaled 1,063 yards and 11 touchdowns on 70 receptions.
As the Bears’ roster is currently constructed, Golladay would be the wide receiver starting on the opposite side of Robinson in the Bears’ offense. Such a move would force opposing defenses to choose between Robinson or Golladay with who they would want their primary cornerback to shadow. Not to mention, the opportunities it would create for Mooney.
Where the Bears’ interest in Golladay becomes interesting is how it impacts the situation with Robinson. If the Bears feel that they are unable to reconcile with Robinson, then the signing of Golladay would certainly create the opportunity for the Bears to entertain trade offers for their current primary wide receiver.
One thing is clear with the Chicago Bears and this off-season, as the days go by, it seems their moves create more questions than they do answers.
