Chicago Bears 7-Round Mock Draft: A post-Andy Dalton dilemma
By Ryan Heckman
When the offseason officially opened for the Bears, we knew one thing was going to happen, without a doubt. The team was going to part with either Charles Leno or Bobby Massie, and they did just that by declining the option they had with Massie.
Just Tuesday, the Bears agreed to terms with Germain Ifedi on a contract worth up to $5 million for one year. Ifedi has experience at both guard and tackle, and with the Bears also having seen breakout play from Sam Mustipher and Alex Bars, they’re not in as bad of shape as some might think.
But, they still need competition at tackle, and that’s where Brenden Jaimes comes in. The Nebraska product is also a multi-dimensional lineman who may be a better fit at guard, however, right tackle seems to be a great spot as well.
Jaimes’ best traits come in the run game. He is a physical player at the point of attack and is a much better run blocker than he is pass protector. But, that doesn’t mean he’s poor in pass protection. He simply shines more so in the run game because of his aggressive nature.
As a fifth rounder, Jaimes presents solid value here and could even compete to start if given the opportunity. While it’s a bit later to start the quest up front, the Bears have simply gone best player available at this point.
