Chicago Bears 2021 Free Agency: Recent cap casualties to avoid
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears should pass on the recently-cut Kyle Van Voy
At the beginning of 2020 free agency, the last position you would have thought the Bears spend big on was on the edge. Already boasting a big, fat contract in Khalil Mack, not to mention plenty of talent with that guy, the Bears wouldn’t have dared go after another big name on that front.
But, they did so in signing Robert Quinn to a massive contract. In 2020, Quinn not only underperformed but did so to the extent that has Pace being looked at as a complete and utter clown for handing out that contract.
Kyle Van Noy is a name that shouldn’t even have to be said, but as the Bears’ front man has proved in the past, never say never.
The Bears may need some depth at the edge position, sure, but Van Noy is still a productive player who could start on a few teams. Would he be a nice luxury to have? Absolutely. The defense could end up being an elite unit, but spending at this position would be the most foolish move Pace could possibly pull off at this stage in the game.
Focus on the clear needs in free agency. That should be a given. Van Noy is a very good player, but the Bears do not need him.
