The Chicago Bears should pass on the recently-cut Golden Tate

If the Bears are going to go after a free agent wide receiver, it should be one name and one name only: Allen Robinson.

It sounds like Chicago will use the franchise tag on Robinson, but then comes the issue of whether or not he’ll play under the tag. That situation might get messy, and if it does, where do the Bears turn?

I can assure you this: it shouldn’t be Golden Tate, who was recently informed he’ll be searching for a new team for 2021.

A few years ago, Tate was looked at as one of the better possession receivers in football. He was great after the catch and a strong route runner. At this stage in his career, he’s not worth spending on, though.

His route-running may still be pristine, but he’s lost a step compared to his younger days. The six touchdowns in 2019 were nice to see. I’ll give him that.

Up until two years ago, health was not an issue for Tate. But, in 2019, he missed five games. Last season, he missed a total of four games. Age might just be catching up with him. Tate will be 33 years old when this upcoming season kicks off.

Tate can still be a productive number two or three option in the NFL, however with his name, he’ll want more money than the Bears would even consider giving him. Plus, don’t forget the point: the only free agent receiver the Bears should be targeting and locking down is number 12.
