Chicago Cubs: Three players who are gone after 2021
Speaking of Yu Darvish, the Chicago Cubs got Zach Davies in return for him from the San Diego Padres. You know your pitching staff is very good if you don’t have room for Zach Davies and that was the reality for the Padres going into 2021. That rotation is going to get even more loaded heading into 2022. That team is so sweet now and the Cubs have to deal with them as fellow members of the National League.
Fortunately for them, they do get one year of Zach Davies. They may or may not try and resign him but that will largely depend on how the team plays this year. He only has one year left on his deal and then he is a free agent. The Cubs made this trade to get prospects but Davies is an interesting piece. He is a solid pitcher that eats innings and helps his team win games.
It is hard to see the Cubs having a good enough year to retain him. It may cost a decent amount of money if he is as good as he was in 2020 where he had a 2.73 ERA, 1.067 WHIP, 1.7 WAR, 63 strikeouts, and a 7-4 record. The Cubs have a lot of big decisions to make and it doesn’t feel like keeping him beyond this year is going to be in the cards.
