Chicago Bears: Alex Smith is not better than these free agent options
By Ryan Heckman
Mitchell Trubisky is still a better option for the Chicago Bears than Alex Smith
It is a tough call to make, but maybe Mitchell Trubisky is a better option than all of these guys. Smith is clearly not an option the Bears could count on. Winston would be interesting, and he still gives the Bears some potential of a dual-threat quarterback.
Fitzpatrick is a wild card. You never know what you’ll get with him.
Meanwhile, Trubisky knows the offense and is certainly capable of taking off with his legs. Is he the best quarterback option for the Bears this offseason? Absolutely not. If the Bears can avoid bringing him back, they should. That ship has sailed.
But, for the sake of this argument, if the Bears were truly considering Smith, why wouldn’t they just bring back Trubisky? Either way, the franchise is going to take a dive in 2021. Trubisky still, at least, gives Chicago the best chance to win over Smith.
The run he and the Bears went on towards the end of the season has to count for something, similar to the run Smith made in Washington. However, both quarterbacks had other reasons why their teams were winning.
For Smith, it was his defense. He wasn’t the sole reason Washington was winning games. For Trubisky, it was the fact that Chicago was playing against easier defenses and the offense was able to take advantage. At least, for Trubisky’s sake, he was part of why the Bears were winning.
With all of that said, none of these are ideal options for the Bears going forward. If Chicago truly wants to take a step forward and compete, they’ll do whatever they can to land Wilson, Watson or move up and find their franchise quarterback in the draft.
