By far, the best option for the Chicago Bears over Alex Smith is Jameis Winston

Again, we’re talking about realistic free agent options. If you were to say that Dak Prescott is a realistic option for the Bears, then obviously he would be a clear number one atop this list. However, all signs point to a deal getting done in Dallas one way or another. Prescott isn’t going anywhere, barring a blockbuster swap with Seattle for Wilson.

Last season, the New Orleans Saints signed Taysom Hill to an extension, all while bringing in Jameis Winston to be their true backup quarterback. In the end, it was Hill who ended up starting in place of an injured Drew Brees, which left fans wondering what all the talk was about in regards to Winston.

There were reports that Sean Payton would like to keep Winston around as Brees’ ultimate successor, but starting Hill made some scratch their head.

If Winston ends up hitting free agency, he would be a clear upgrade over Smith. He’s younger, by far, and still offers some mobility which has left Smith now that he’s 36 years old and working with a reconstructed leg.

Winston also loves to throw the football deep. He takes chances, which sometimes come back to bite him. However, the Bears need a quarterback who can throw the ball deep on occasion. They were missing a lot of the big plays to a guy like Darnell Mooney last season — Foles doesn’t exactly throw the most accurate deep ball.

It’s a pretty easy call to make — Winston over Smith.
