Chicago Bears: Buster Skrine replacements that make them better

The Chicago Bears are looking for a replacement for Buster Skrine as they cut him on Monday.

The Chicago Bears‘ retool of their roster seems to be already underway. On Monday, they announced that they are releasing veteran cornerback, Buster Skrine. This is a move that will clear some cap space if they want to make an improvement or add somewhere else. Their defense is getting older as it is but you never know who they use to replace him. They might promote from within or they might look at someone on the outside. These are three good options to replace him going forward:

Duke Shelley was selected in the sixth round (205th overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft. He didn’t start a single game in his rookie season but he appeared in nine of them. In 2020, he appeared in 11 games but he was given the opportunity to start in two of them. He is 24 years old and might be looking to take a full-time job in the NFL now that Buster Skrine is gone.

In all of the games he appeared in this past season, he wasn’t a game-breaker or anything but he wasn’t given that much of an opportunity. He had 16 total tackles as he had nine solo tackles and seven assisted tackles. He deflected one pass as well. The Bears aren’t sure what they have in Shelley just yet but they might find out if they use him as one of Skrine’s full-time replacements.

It would probably be smart to go that route because it would be cheaper and could force them to learn that they have a diamond in the rough. If that were to happen, they would be able to use some of that money on other parts of the roster.
