Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Marcus Mariota in, Allen Robinson out
By Ryan Heckman
Most were probably wondering why this pick was no. 61 and not no. 52, but here’s the scoop to explain. Chicago executes a trade with Buffalo to move back a bit and net another pick.
Bears get: Pick 61, Pick 93
Bills get: Pick 52, 2022 4th Round Pick
Now, with the 61st selection, the Bears have offensive line in mind. After all, the tackle position is in major need of an upgrade. The Bears will definitely move on from either Charles Leno or Bobby Massie this offseason, and some of the reason would be to save a little cash.
But, the other facet of the decision would be solely based on play. Leno, in particular, has regressed immensely since seeing himself in the Pro Bowl a few years back.
This is where Jalen Mayfield comes in. The former Michigan Wolverine is one of the better tackles in this class, but projects mostly as a second rounder because of his lack of experience starting in college.
Mayfield is a physical specimen at 6-foot-5, 319 pounds. He is very athletic, as evidenced in how he handled some of the better pass rushers in the nation over his 15 starts at Michigan.
He doesn’t show any major signs of weakness, but the fact that he’s started less than two full seasons is the main reason some are weary on Mayfield. However, he’s got all the tools he needs to become one of the top tackles in this league, and the Bears would be wise to snag him here.
