Chicago Blackhawks: Pius Suter is an impressive young player
The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the more impressive teams so far this season. That isn’t because they are one of the best teams but it is because they are one of the teams doing the best job at exceeding expectations. They are getting good goaltending on most nights and Patrick Kane is lighting the league on fire once again as we would expect. All of that is great and much appreciated but some of the young guys contributing is one of the biggest keys as well.
One of those young guys is Pius Suter. He comes from Switzerland which is slowly becoming a very good hockey country. They have two players in the league who are now captains in Nico Hischier of the New Jersey Devils and Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators. There are also some other really good Swiss players and Suter is the latest to come out. He has been sensational this season in his role for Chicago.
Chicago Blackhawks have an impressive young player on their hands.
In 21 games this season, he has six goals and five assists for 11 points. That is some really good production from an undrafted player trying to make his way in an NHL lineup. There have been times this season where he landed on a gold mind centering Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat which is an incredible opportunity. They have also learned that he can play up and down a lineup depending on what they need that day.
Suter has one year left on his current deal and then will be a restricted free agent. You can probably expect the Blackhawks to resign him to a very fair deal after this season is over. He might be able to be a very good depth player for them as they try to retool.
He isn’t a productive NHL player because he is the most talented player either. Of course, he does have some talent but he is where he is largely because of his brain. He knows what he needs to do in order to play with someone like Kane and he also knows what he needs to do if he is playing on the third or fourth line. That is exactly what you need in bunches from more than one player and Suter has done his job well.
Coach Jeremy Colliton also deserves some credit for the way Suter, and all of the young players for that matter, have played their roles. We already know that this team is exceeding expectations and it will only continue if the team continues to play (and work) as a team. Their next opportunity to do this comes over the weekend with a back-to-back against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center. It is a big chance for them to bank some more standings points against a team they have been better than.
