Chicago Bears top free agency safety targets: Deon Bush

Let’s start in-house with Deon Bush, who has been with the Bears his entire career. Chicago drafted Bush back in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Miami, and as we’ve said before about him, Bush has improved every year he’s been in the league.

He’s never been a full-time starter, but when he’s been asked to step in and play for his teammates who have gone down to injury, he’s been more than adequate. There have been several times during camp and preseason where coaches have publicly gone out of their way to praise his efforts, and pretty soon, he’ll be noticed on a broader level.

The Bears have a choice to make. They can either re-sign Bush to be their starter next to Jackson or let him find a new team via free agency. He’s become a solid enough veteran over the years where he is finally at a point that he could find a job elsewhere.

If Chicago wants to go a cheaper route in general, bringing him back would be a smart move. He has continuity with the guys. He knows new defensive coordinator Sean Desai well. There wouldn’t be a learning curve and, quite frankly, there wouldn’t be a drop off in production.

Bush has become a candidate to start in this league, and it could be with the Bears. This might end up being the route to go, especially if the team wants to save some cash.
