Many players were disgruntled with how their games were managed last season with Jim Boylen in charge. However, when the new management came in and recognized a change was necessary for the team to compete.
Chicago brought in a proven winner, and someone who has handled many great players and a lot of pressure. Billy Donovan was a steal for the upward-trending Bulls.
Donovan coached the University of Florida for 19 years and led them to back-to-back national championships between 2005-2007. Donovan then left for the NBA in 2015 and coached the Oklahoma City Thunder for five years before being fired despite making the playoffs with a roster with little talent.
Donovan never had a losing season with the Thunder and knows what it is like to have a winning culture and be in pressure situations. Donovan has proved this so far with the young Bulls team as he makes every game an opportunity to develop the team further.
Last year there were questions about whether or not Boylen wanted to win close games at the end based on his strategies and lineups. However, Donovan leaves no doubts this year.
Donovan has used a plethora of different lineups in close games and isn’t afraid to go against the norm if he believes it gives his team the best shot. Donovan has also transitioned Zach Lavine into the primary ball-handler and he understands the true value of a star after his time in Oklahoma City.
The Bulls have been trending upward and will continue to compete for the rest of the year for numerous reasons. But they can look at their experience, superstar, and new coach to lead the charge.
