Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 57. Khyiris Tonga. 6. player. DL. BYU

With their final pick of the draft, the Bears go defense for just the second time. Over the last couple of years, Chicago has had a few different guys play the reserve roles along the defensive line. It’s been Nick Williams, Mario Edwards and Mitch Unrein as the fifth or sixth linemen off the bench.

This last year, the Bears truly missed Eddie Goldman plugging up the middle. In selecting Khyiris Tonga out of BYU, the Bears get another interior run stuffer they could keep around for a while behind Goldman.

Tonga is a big boy, standing 6-foot-4 and 322 pounds. His greatest asset, other than simply pure size, is his strength. Tonga is a brute. He’s got himself a nice bull rush and uses all-out strength to work his way to the back field in a hurry.

Another area he excels is in batting down passes. Being able to consistently deflect passes as an interior linemen is a rare trait, but Tonga came up with five just last season. In his four seasons at BYU, Tonga deflected 12 passes in total.

The Bears would be fortunate to add some depth to the defensive line here and hopefully garner some cohesiveness between their starters and reserves for a few years.
