Chicago Bears: Five darkhorse NFL Draft prospects at 20th overall
By Usayd Koshul
3. TE Pat Freiermuth, Penn State
Chicago invested the 43rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft into Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet and while Kmet did flash the potential to be a solid starter in his rookie season, Pat Freiermuth would be an ideal running mate.
If you haven’t noticed by now, Matt Nagy’s offense needs a receiving tight end to better function. Adding a player of Freiermuth’s caliber wouldn’t just be a security blanket for the quarterback, it’d have a positive impact on the production of the wide receivers as well.
Freiermuth’s size and receiving skills make him such an attractive option for the Bears offense. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Chicago would be able to place Freiermuth all over the place. He could operate from the slot, presenting the opportunity for a mismatch on any given play.
Highly productive in three seasons at Penn State, Freiermuth finished his college career with 92 receptions for 1185 yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging 12.9 yards per reception. Essentially, he’s proven to be an asset in the passing game and should continue to get better at the next level.
With veteran Jimmy Graham turning 35 years old, Chicago could cut him this offseason because the team isn’t likely to keep an aging veteran on the books for $10 million dollars in 2021. Cutting Graham opens up a need that Chicago needs to address and Freiermuth is the right fit.
