Chicago Cubs: 3 free agents who could still give the team a boost
The Chicago Cubs‘ offseason has been a bit of a roller-coaster. It began with the release of fan-favorite Kyle Schwarber and the trade of Cy Young runner-up Yu Darvish to the Padres. Recently, the club added a pair of potentially impactful free agents in pitcher Trevor Williams and outfielder Joc Pederson.
After sounding the financial alarm, the Ricketts family seems to have found a few additional dollars to spend, perhaps in a suit pocket. With spring training just days away, the Cubs still have a few needs. Jed Hoyer would like to add another starting pitcher, infield depth, and possibly another bat for the outfield.
With spring training fast approaching, the Chicago Cubs still have a few needs and these free agents could help the cause.
As the club currently stands, the rotation will likely feature Kyle Hendricks, Kyle Davies, Trevor Williams, Alex Mills, otherwise known as Mr. No-Hitter, and a combination of Adbert Alzolay, Brailyn Marquez, and Tyson Miller. Former Twins first-round pick Kohl Stewart may also get a look.
As of now, the infield third-to-first includes Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Nico Hoerner, and Anthony Rizzo, with David Bote and Ildemaro Vargas filling in. The outfield will be made up of Joc Pederson in left, Ian Happ in center, and Jason Heyward in right, with Phillip Ervin the only other major league outfielder on the roster.
Here are three free agents who, while not exciting, may help the Cubs round out their roster.
