Chicago Bears Mock Draft: Carson Wentz trade changes things
By Ryan Heckman
It may not be at the forefront of many fans’ minds, but inside linebacker is certainly a spot which could use some upgrading. Let’s be fair to the other side of the ball, because if we’re talking about the Bears replacing either Charles Leno or Bobby Massie (or both in this mock’s case), then we have to keep it even.
Danny Trevathan may be sticking around for two more years due to his contract, but that doesn’t mean his job should be safe. Trevathan showed plenty of signs of aging last year. He was far too slow on many occasions, being caught out of place and seeing opposing runners and receivers flying right past him.
It may be time for some competition at Trevathan’s spot, especially if the Bears go best player available — which they should.
Cameron McGrone is an ideal inside linebacker prospect and could push Trevathan quite a bit in camp. Having played in just 19 games with the Wolverines, his experience and sample size is limited. But, he’s a quick, athletic kid who definitely looks the part.
In his first season starting back in 2019, McGrone totaled 65 tackles, including 9.0 for a loss, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defensed. He would do well in the Bears’ scheme, especially if Sean Desai decides to send a few blitzes here and there. McGrone has shown the ability to make stops in the back field and loves to blitz. Desai could get creative with the speed he has in McGrone and Roquan Smith.
