The Chicago Bears need an upgrade at tackle, and trading Charles Leno would be a win

For the 2021 season, Charles Leno’s cap number sits just over $11 million. That’s pretty spendy for a guy who looked lost at times last year. There were many plays on film where Leno nearly stood straight up out of his stance and looked around as though he didn’t know who he should block.

At the same time, he did have some bright moments, as he has over the last few seasons. He was given an extension for a reason at one point. Leno even made a Pro Bowl appearance a couple of years ago. But, between the money and his inconsistencies, he is replaceable.

Trading Leno’s contract might be tricky, therefore the Bears would be fortunate to get anything in return. If Chicago found an offensive line-needy team in a worse position than themselves and with plenty of money (think maybe the New York Jets) they should make the call.

Getting something along the lines of a conditional sixth-round pick or even a seventh rounder in exchange for Leno would be a victory. That pick could be used as somewhat of a throw-in on a deal of a much bigger magnitude, but it would certainly help the Bears’ cause of getting a larger trade done.
