The Chicago Cubs are playing games this offseason. They started off by telling people that they have had losses “of biblical proportion” which is going to cause them to cut some payroll. They let Kyle Schwarber and Jon Lester go along with trading Yu Darvish away. There have also been rumors involving trades for Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras which tell people that they don’t want to pay them. After all of that, they signed Joc Pederson to a seven million dollar deal. Are they trying to win the division or not?

If the Chicago Cubs are trying to win, there are still some good starters available.

The National League Central is a division that is up for grabs going into 2021. None of the teams look right now like they are going to be a powerhouse. A team reaching 88-90 wins could be enough to take the division title and right now the Cubs are right there. The Pittsburgh Pirates are going to be one of the worst teams in the league, the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds look very average right now, and the St. Louis Cardinals could be the team competing for the division with the Cubs.

If the Cubs add another starting pitcher or two, there is no reason that they can’t win it. They would be completely going against what they have said all winter but now it sounds like Tom Ricketts may have increased the payroll. If Jed Hoyer uses that “extra money” wisely, they could be in the playoffs once again.

It makes you wonder why they couldn’t bring Lester, Schwarber, or Darvish back but they are gone now. It is what it is but now they might be looking to bring in another starter that can help them win. They already brought in Trevor Williams so they are clearly looking to have some good pitching. If they wanted to add even more before Spring Training, these are the three they are most likely to look at:
