The Chicago Bears may end up with Matthew Stafford under center in 2021.

Chicago is expected to be active in the quarterback market as the team is going to look for an upgrade over Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles.

There really is only one salvation of hope that Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace has in terms of saving his job, and that is to get the quarterback position right. If the Bears get the quarterback position right this offseason, chances are they will be a legitimate playoff contender in 2021.

We have already heard that the Bears have placed a call to the Houston Texans regarding the availability of DeShaun Watson. In the event that Watson is indeed a pipedream for the Bears, could the team turn to a division rival for help?

There are a couple things to unpack from that tweet.

The first being that the Bears are wasting no time in addressing the quarterback position this offseason. While that may seem like an obvious stance that the Bears should have, it is reassuring to at least have that confirmation given the tone deaf mindset that is in place at Halas Hall.

The second, and perhaps most important takeaway, is that Stafford has the Bears listed among his top four destinations.

Given the lame duck statuses that are surrounding Pace and Bears head coach Matt Nagy, the fear has been that the Bears will struggle to attract players to Chicago given the uncertainty with the current leadership group. That could be the reason for the mass exodus on Nagy’s coaching staff so far this off-season. That sentiment does not always translate for players considering that they operate with a mindset of money talks. Or, in Stafford’s case, winning games talks.

Stafford is likely viewing the Bears as a team in which he can join the team and instantly be in a contending situation given the window on the team’s defense is still open. And, at the age of 32, Stafford likely still has six or seven viable seasons left in him as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Of course, the issue that the Bears are going to run into is that the team trading Stafford is the Detroit Lions. It does not seem too likely that the Lions would be too open to the idea of trading Stafford within the division and having to play against him twice a year. The only option would be if the Lions forced the Bears to up their offer. Which, at that point, the Bears would be better off pursuing other options as opposed to having to overpay in terms of draft compensation to acquire Stafford.
