Chicago Bears: Matthew Stafford trades and future implications
If the Chicago Bears added a great quarterback like Matthew Stafford, one of two things would happen. The first possibility is that it just doesn’t work. The roster could prove itself to be very overrated, the coaches haven’t proved they are very good so that is an issue, or the player could come and be injured all of the time (as he does have an injury history).
The other possibility is that the Bears add an elite quarterback and become a Super Bowl contender. This defense took a step back in 2020 but it could be a direct result of the offense. They were on the field a lot two years in a row and that could have hurt them. If they added a quarterback that can score points and allow the defense to rest, they could absolutely become a Super Bowl contender if the rest of the team carries their weight.
As we’ve seen in Houston, having a good quarterback guarantees you nothing. It does, however, improve your chances to win. It would also improve their chances of seeing major change at the top if it didn’t work. If Ryan Pace traded for Matthew Stafford and the team still stunk, you could expect them to clean house. Either way, 2021 would be a positive year for the Bears if they added this player.
It would also impact the future beyond 2021 as well. If Stafford plays well, he is only 32 years old and could have plenty of great football left in him. If he was lousy, they could find a way to get rid of him and move on (in more ways than one). As a result of all of these things, this is definitely something for the team to consider.
