Signing Kevin King adds needed cornerback depth for the Chicago Bears

Since selecting Kevin King back in 2017, the Packers have yet to see consistency from the Washington product. He was one of the most athletic guys the draft had ever seen at the position, but has struggled with technique at times.

Consistency has not been King’s strong suit. Last season, he totaled five interceptions, looking like he was on his way to becoming a formidable corner. But, as proven by his zero picks in 2020, that’s a stat that can only show so much.

In the NFC Championship on Sunday, King was less than stellar. Many fans were calling for his head after a handful of plays he was beat.

For that reason, they may end up letting him go and find a new home via free agency. For the Bears, he’s not a perfect signing by any means, but King would add some needed depth behind Kyle Fuller and Jaylon Johnson.

Chicago has compiled their depth in the secondary via late-round picks for the most part over the past few years, so they’ve seen some guys struggle if a starter goes down. Looking at last year, both Duke Shelley and Kindle Vildor had plenty of time off the bench and each one had their fair share of down moments. To be fair, there were some good moments as well.

But, that just goes to show that this position needs more competition. The cornerback room has to get better, and getting an experienced veteran like King (should the Packers give up on him) may push him to new heights with a new team. That would strengthen the Bears’ secondary significantly behind Fuller and Johnson.
