The Chicago Bears could get a bargain with Allen Lazard

The fact that Allen Lazard hadn’t fully broken out in Green Bay just yet could mean his free agency value is not quite where it should be. Accompanied by his being out several games due to injury this year, and Lazard may end up being a bargain no matter where he goes.

Back in the 2018 draft, Lazard went undrafted out of Iowa State and caught on with the Packers that year. After seeing just one target in his rookie season, which he caught, Lazard received more of an opportunity in 2019.

In his second season, Lazard caught 35 of 52 targets for 477 yards and three touchdowns. In 2020, it was a similar story in terms of production but he did not play in all 16 games due to core surgery. Lazard caught 33 passes for 451 yards and three touchdowns over the regular season, and now he will enter free agency in March.

Aaron Rodgers has been searching for a true number two option opposite Davante Adams for a while now, and at one point it appeared the 6-foot-5 Lazard could be that guy. He might still have the opportunity in the future, but the Packers would need to re-sign him.

The Bears should at least dip their toes in the water here, because Lazard’s size and speed is a pretty rare combination. Adding someone like him to the offense would give the Bears two players who could work the outside in he and Darnell Mooney. Plus, again, Lazard would come cheap due to his lack of experience and production.
