Chicago Bears: Sean Desai must focus on these defensive priorities
By Ryan Heckman
2. The Chicago Bears will get the old Eddie Jackson under Sean Desai
Over the last two seasons, the Bears have not seen the over-aggressive, ball-hawking Eddie Jackson like they did in 2018. Part of that has to do with the Bears not getting to the quarterback as often as they once did, which then made it easier on the secondary to come up with poor throws or potentially batted balls.
After working with Jackson for a couple of years and also seeing how he was used under Fangio, there should be no reason why Jackson isn’t allowed to float around and play his style of football. This is a player who is most effective when he’s able to sniff out the football using good old-fashioned instincts.
Desai must also have a hand in finding a long-term solution opposite Jackson. Specifically, this team needs a safety who can play up in the box and smash some skulls in the run game like Adrian Amos once did.
Getting a capable strong safety will allow Jackson to play more freely as well, which has to be a top priority. This is a high-level player who had a down year in 2019, but with the right scheme and direction, he’ll be back in no time.
