Chicago Bears: How recent quarterback moves impact the Bears’ offseason
By Ryan Heckman
Philip Rivers retired, and the Indianapolis Colts pick right after the Chicago Bears
The biggest quarterback move made thus far, from all eliminated teams, has been out of Indy. Philip Rivers retired after 17 seasons in the NFL, leaving the Colts without a viable starting quarterback going forward.
What’s most interesting is the fact that the Bears own the 20th overall pick and the Colts pick at no. 21.
At the moment, Indianapolis is now yet another team the Bears will have to worry about trading up ahead of them and snagging a quarterback. Quite frankly, there are several teams ahead of the Bears whom could also end up drafting a quarterback — and a few which may try and move up like the Bears will have to.
Indianapolis drafted Jacob Eason out of Washington last year, and they loved him during training camp. There were many reports which came out and said Eason impressed during those summer practices and that the Colts liked what they saw.
There’s a reason Eason was once looked at as potentially one of the top quarterbacks in last year’s class before falling to the fourth round. Right now, the Colts have a strong rushing attack and a rising wide receiver in Michael Pittman Jr., plus a diverse tight end group and respectable offensive line.
How much confidence do they have in Eason, though? That’s the big question. At this very moment, I wouldn’t count out the Colts as a team who would want to trade up and grab a top-end quarterback, especially when they have a large amount of cap space that can be used to fill holes elsewhere.
