Chicago Bears: These quarterback moves could secure Ryan Pace’s future
By Ryan Heckman
Finally, the Chicago Bears could mortgage it all for Justin Fields
Lastly, Pace could opt for another enormous draft day trade. If he wanted to move up to get a guy like Justin Fields, he would likely have to get into the top three picks. Realistically, that would cost this year’s first-round pick, next year’s first-round pick, a pair of third or fourth rounders and, if their trade partner gets greedy, maybe their first rounder in 2023.
That’s quite the haul for the Bears to get Fields, and he’s certainly had his question marks. On some days, Fields looks like the best quarterback in this class. But, on others, he’s looked nothing more than a mid-first type of prospect.
Out of all these scenarios, this is the highest risk. This could be a move which either keeps Pace around for the long haul, or gets him fired within a couple of years. It all depends on how Fields pans out and if Nagy is the right guy to get the best out of him.
In 2019, Fields tossed 41 touchdowns to just three picks. This last season, he threw 22 touchdowns and six interceptions in a shorter season. The fact that he had the stellar 2019 season, though, gives teams the confidence that he can be a franchise guy. Fields put some excellent film out there over that campaign, and had a pretty good year in 2020 as well.
Mortgaging it all for Fields means the Bears think he’s ready to start immediately. If that’s the case, he better be the second coming of either Deshaun Watson or the aforementioned Prescott, because the Bears would be strapped for draft capital going forward.
