Facing other competition to trade up in the draft, the Chicago Bears may set their sights on Trey Lance

Instead of going after a veteran, the Bears could decide that trading up in this year’s draft is the way to go. One of the most polarizing prospects in this entire class is quarterback Trey Lance out of North Dakota State.

More from Da Windy City

He’s tough to project mostly because of his level of competition faced in college. Coming from a program like NDSU, Lance has not had the opportunity to take on top-end defenses like many other top quarterback prospects have.

But, Lance has absolutely dominated the competition he has faced. This past season was different, because the Bison decided to push off their season until the spring. Lance only played in one game this past fall because of that decision by his school. NDSU played just one game while deciding to push the rest of the season a few months down the road.

With that decision, Lance won’t end up playing in that season of course, because he’ll be going through the draft process.

The Bears landing a quarterback like Lance would be highly intriguing, though, because they have never had an athlete like this under center. Lance is as much of a threat on the ground as he is to pass. In 2019, he totaled 42 touchdowns between the air and ground, and more impressively he threw zero interceptions.

Pace would not have to give up as much as he would if he was to go after a guy like Justin Fields or Zach Wilson. One would imagine he’d have to trade up to the 7-10 range to snag Lance, which would likely mean he’s trading this year’s first and next year’s first to do so.
