Chicago Cubs: Continue to embarrass themselves this offseason
The Chicago Cubs are having an embarrassing offseason for themselves and their fans.
The Cubs continue to allow their team to get worse and most of it is at the hands of themselves. They won the division in 2020 and could easily win it again if they just cared about winning. Every other team in the NL Central seems to be saving some cash and the Cubs decided to do the same. They could have themselves a great year in 2021 but instead, they have decided to let it go.
Now, they could still win the division if things go perfectly in their favor. The other teams in the division are also not great. There is also the potential for the bullpen to be horrible, Kyle Hendricks be the only good starter, and the offense scores a low amount of runs which could see them lose 90+ games. Everything is on the table for them going into Spring Training and it is all their fault.
The reason this is a topic of conversation right now is that they allowed Jon Lester to move on to the Washington Nationals. The news broke on Monday night and fans should be none too pleased with it. He is the greatest signing in the history of the Chicago Cubs and it is a debate with Marian Hossa (Chicago Blackhawks) for the best in the history of Chicago sports. They didn’t offer him anything close to the money that he is getting from Washington and that is just a shame.
He isn’t the only great Cubs alumni that is now a member of the Nationals. Kyle Schwarber is there as well and they will be teammates. Washington had a down year in 2020 after winning the World Series in 2019 but they are looking pretty good for 2021. They play in a solid division so it will surely be interesting to watch.
Willson Contreras could very well be gone by next week as well. The Washington Nationals are one of the teams that make the most sense for him in a trade. Whether or not the Cubs get fair value is up to Jed Hoyer and his staff. They already traded Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres and the return they got proves that it was nothing more than a salary dump.
We don’t know quite yet what is going to happen to Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, or Anthony Rizzo but they can’t be happy with what is going on around them. Theo Epstein is gone and won’t be there to fix any of this. They even lost their great broadcaster, Len Kasper, as he is headed to do the radio broadcast for the Chicago White Sox.
Since winning the World Series in 2016, the Cubs have made bad trades, bad signings, and let some of their most important players go for little in return. This embarrassing offseason that they are currently in is a result of themselves and more bad decision making. Brace yourself, 2021 isn’t going to be great for the Chicago Cubs.
