Chicago Bears: 5 impulsive trades to quickly fix quarterback position
By Ryan Heckman
Trade 1: The Chicago Bears move up to draft Trey Lance
One of the most polarizing draft prospects of 2021 is North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. The year 2020 did not help him whatsoever, as Lance only played in one exhibition game last fall.
With only one game on his 2020 tape and having played against such weak competition in college, Lance is viewed as a huge risk by many — but a risk which could end up paying off in a big way.
There are mobile quarterbacks, and then there is Lance, who is basically an iron-built running back who can throw the ball. When Lance runs, he runs strong and smart. He’s not like a Lamar Jackson with eye-popping agility. No, Lance runs more like a running back with a purpose when he takes off, and it’s special to watch.
In addition to his elite mobility, Lance can throw the ball. What makes me laugh is those who want to criticize and ask the question: can he make NFL throws? Everybody and their mother asked the same question about Lamar Jackson, and look where he is now.
Lance is well-worth the unknown risk. He put enough on tape in 2019 with his 42 touchdown season (and no interceptions, mind you) to warrant a top-15 pick. Add him to the Chicago back field featuring David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen, and you’ll have something pretty sensational to watch.
