Lie Number 1: Other NFL teams envy the Chicago Bears’ culture

The very first lie told was straight from the mouth of Ted Phillips. He told Bears media that they have a culture which “every NFL team” strives for.

What kind of culture is that, exactly? Most Bears media scratched their heads over that comment, and Phillips was even asked about why other teams should envy their culture when their record has been 8-8 for two straight seasons.

Phillips’ response to that question included the phrase “it goes beyond wins and losses” and can essentially be summed up as such:

“We may not be winning games, but at least we have nice people working for us.”

One particular fan compared the sentiment to any other business out there, and imagined if Phillips was put in charge. If Phillips was in charge of say, a retail chain, and he had that type of mentality, it would basically be saying, “We’re not making much money, but we have very nice employees.”

Being good people doesn’t necessarily make them great at coaching, accountability, play-calling and overcoming adversity. Speaking of adversity, that’s a point hammered home in the press conference as well.

Phillips and McCaskey continued to talk about the team responding to the 6-game losing streak as though they came back and had a miraculous Super Bowl run. The fact is, they broke that streak by beating three very beatable defenses, followed by an embarrassment against the Packers and a Wildcard loss in which the offense yet again looked inept.

Other teams envy this culture? Please, Mr. Phillips, try and explain that one again.
