Chicago Bulls: 3 takeaways from the West Coast road trip
Coby White as a point guard is processing…but is still a project
Before anyone decides to jump down my throat, I want to make it clear that I believe that Coby White is capable of being a starting point guard in this league.
His decision making has improved since last year, he has the capability to mix scoring and playmaking, and his chemistry with Zach LaVine is coming around.
That being said, he still has a ways to go before he and LaVine can become the next great backcourt. White had a couple of outstanding games on this trip, including a career-high 13 assists against the Clippers (though he did also have five turnovers).
White did not have a single game with a positive plus/minus box score in the four games he played. While this can be a misleading stat, it’s becoming more evident that White needs to improve in order to contribute to winning games.
To be fair, he gave a great effort against Sacramento: 36 points on 65 percent shooting to compliment his seven assists.
More importantly, zero turnovers in that game.
His assist line went 5-7-5-13 in the four games, as he boosted his current average to 6.2 per game on the season. His three turnovers per game speak to his need to improve his IQ and his handle on the ball, but the progress is evident.
His work throughout the season and next offseason should be focused on his handles and watching film to further break down his passing game. If his shot stays consistent along with constant improvement in taking care of the basketball, White could turn into an all-star.
