Chicago Bears’ potential replacements for Allen Robinson: Chris Godwin

Looking at the crop of free agent wide receivers, there is not much beyond the three listed here if the Bears are wanting a true number one option. But, Chris Godwin is actually one of the closest types to Robinson.

Godwin is similar size at 6-foot-1 and is an excellent route runner, also like Robinson.

The intriguing part of Godwin’s free agency is actually his teammate, Mike Evans, who will count $16 million against the cap in 2021 and $18 million in both 2022 and 2023. Will the Bucs actually want to pay two wide receivers top-end money? That’s not a likely scenario.

Unless Tampa Bay trades Evans, they will probably see Godwin leave in free agency. A lot also might depend on how this season ends and if Tom Brady plays another year.

For the Bears, Godwin is a perfect replacement for Robinson though. He gives them such a similar skill set as Robinson. Chicago already has a wide receiver who can be the team’s deep threat in Darnell Mooney, and Godwin would give them the possession type opposite of Mooney.

In 2020, Godwin’s numbers were down a bit compared to his 2019 Pro Bowl season, but that’s primarily because of the additions of Antonio Brown and Rob Gronkowski, and Brady spreading the ball around. This year, Godwin caught 65 passes for 840 yards and seven scores in 12 games.
