The Chicago Bears must let Mitchell Trubisky walk

Look, fans should be at the point where they are ready to see the Bears do whatever it takes to get a competent quarterback on this roster. Clearly, it is not Mitchell Trubisky. Clearly, it is not Nick Foles, but the Bears are tied to his contract for a little longer, so he’s a fine backup.

As for Trubisky? He has to go. It’s time. He’s shown us exactly who he is and what he’s capable of for four years now.

Trubisky is a guy who can use his legs and make a few plays here and there by extending plays. But, when he’s asked to sit in the pocket and evaluate the coverage he has in front of him, he falls apart. When he’s asked to perform against an above-average defense, he fails to rise to the occasion.

Checking down is only acceptable if you’re the ghost of Eli Manning or the aging Drew Brees who has two of the most lethal weapons the NFL has to offer. As a young quarterback who should be in the prime of his career in terms of development, checking down more often than not is unacceptable.

Making the wrong reads and throwing into double or triple coverage on half of your deep throws (which are also rare occurrences) is unacceptable.

Trubisky should at least be bordering the level of a guy like Baker Mayfield (who was drafted a year later) or Josh Allen (yep, him too). Forget Deshaun Watson or Patrick Mahomes who were both drafted the same year as Trubisky. He can’t even catch up to guys who have been in the league a year less.

He has to go — end of discussion.
