Chicago Bears pass on quarterback in this seven-round mock draft
By Ryan Heckman
In the draft’s final round, the Chicago Bears snag a sizable linebacker at pick 220.
No one is positive what position Zach McCloud will end up playing as a pro, but he’s well-worth a flier late in the draft. At just 6-foot-2, McCloud is a bit undersized which makes him a tough placement at defensive end, unless he gained quite a bit of weight.
Right now, he’s more of a weak side linebacker who excels in zone coverage. The one thing we’ve seen from a guy like Robert Quinn is the inability to cover when called upon. Now, putting Quinn in that position is essentially suicide to begin with. But, if need be, McCloud is a fine option in coverage.
At the very least, he could come in and compete for a depth spot at outside linebacker, and maybe even convert to the inside due to his size.
McCloud does possess solid speed and works well as a horizontal type linebacker. He can get to either sideline in a hurry, although he has to work on wrapping up. He can tend to play a bit too quick in some instances, thus missing an opportunity.
Overall, this draft would be an enormous success for the Bears. Sticking with Trubisky is a debate for another day, but it’s a very real possibility and one which could see the Bears skip on a quarterback altogether. With this type of haul, it’s all about giving Trubisky the best possible situation to succeed.
