Chicago Bears pass on quarterback in this seven-round mock draft
By Ryan Heckman
In Round 5, the Chicago Bears find a versatile safety at pick 160.
Plenty of people have asked the question: “What happened to Eddie Jackson?” Others still wonder who their long-term starter could be opposite of Jackson. While the concern over Jackson is real, I think he’ll be fine in the long run. However, getting another safety in the mix to count on long-term is the real question.
In the fifth round, the Bears take their shot on developing that kind of player in San Diego State’s Tariq Thompson.
One thing Thompson gives the bears is some flexibility position-wise. Thompson has played safety for San Diego State, but also aligned in the slot and as their nickel at times, playing well in those roles.
With Buster Skrine having a tough year in 2020, the Bears could use another option in the slot. Duke Shelley has struggled at that position in Skrine’s place, so adding Thompson could give the Bears an additional body there, too.
Whether it’s at safety or the slot, Thompson’s ball instincts are very good. He tries hard to find the football no matter where he’s lined up. In four college seasons, Thompson has 11 interceptions and 23 passes defensed. He’s also forced five fumbles. This kid wants the football.
Thompson is a pretty sure tackler, too, which is good to have when it comes to run support. The biggest reason he will fall in this draft is due to a lack of any true physical characteristics that jump out. He relies mostly on his feel for the game, rather than having legitimate speed or athletic ability — although the above photo may contradict that statement.
