Chicago Bears: Three reasons they are going to the playoffs
The Chicago Bears finally started to use David Montgomery the right way and he was awesome.
For most of David Montgomery‘s NFL career so far, the Chicago Bears have been pretty lousy at using David Montgomery to the best of his abilities. He is a very good back that any team in the league would find a use for but for some reason, the Bears refused to run the ball with him on a consistent basis. Well, they did finally come up with a plan that allowed Montgomery to break out and impact the team in a good way.
Montgomery’s numbers reflected a back that is very good but underutilized. He had 1070 yards with 15 games played. He had five more carries in 2020 than he did in 2019 but he had almost 200 fewer yards. He also punched the ball into the endzone eight times. Those numbers aren’t bad at all but we know they can be even better. The thing is that they can be better but it is out of his control. They don’t need to be better because he doesn’t play well, they need to be better because of the coaching.
At some point during this season, it felt like someone came to Matt Nagy or Ryan Pace’s desk and threatened their job if they didn’t figure out a way to make Mitchell Trubisky better. Trubisky isn’t an elite quarterback but he can be serviceable if put in the right situation. Part of that is giving him a good running game. Montgomery can provide that good running game and he started to in the second half of the season. Expect him to have a big year in 2021 (if the staff continues to use him right).
