2. Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery has to be the focal point

Over his last five games, David Montgomery has averaged 105.8 rushing yards per game. He’s also scored six rushing touchdowns in his last four. Is it any wonder that the Bears’ offense has put up 140 points in the last four games and 165 in their last five?

Take the last two games, specifically. Montgomery has carried the rock 55 times. It is no coincidence that the Bears’ offense has looked much more complete and has been able to sustain drives.

Two things have helped Montgomery’s resurgence over the second half of the season. First off, the offensive line is playing much better, especially on the interior. Second, Matt Nagy handed play-calling duties to Bill Lazor, who has leaned heavily on the run game — an obviously smart decision.

In this matchup against the Packers, Montgomery will again be leaned on heavily, assuming the defense does their part and can at least hold Rodgers somewhat in check. The Packers began the season as a great matchup for running backs, so you might think Montgomery is in for a big game. However, they’ve improved as the season has gone on. They’ve worked themselves into the top half of the league, defensively, against the run.

This is a true black and blue game, though, and the Bears will need to have their way up front. Chicago has no choice but to bully Green Bay with the run. A big game from Montgomery is a necessity for the Bears to have a chance at a win.
