The news keeps getting worse and worse for the Chicago Blackhawks ahead of 2021.

Things have not been good in 2020 for a lot of people for a lot of obvious reasons. Well, the year really isn’t ending strong for Chicago Blackhawks fans as things keep getting worse and worse. They probably wouldn’t be that good of a team even if everyone was fully healthy but now they legit could be in the running for the worst team in the league. Patrick Kane is still going to be there and fun to watch but beyond that, things aren’t great at all.

The line of bad news started when the Blackhawks announced that Alexander Nylander will be out for 4-6 months because of knee surgery to repair an injury sustained in their final playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights. Some people will say negative things about Nylander because he was a part of a very bad trade but he is still an NHL player. Replacement level players are not as good as Nylander so losing him makes them a worse team and people might realize it if AHL level players end up replacing him.

Things got really bad when Kirby Dach hurt his wrist in a World Junior Classic pre-tournament game playing for Team Canada. It was a freak accident that is going to cause Dach 4-5 months because of surgery he had to repair the injury. He is looking like a great player that the Blackhawks are going to have for a long time but we have to wait to see him in NHL action now.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it came out that Jonathan Toews was going to miss training camp and the start of the season because of illness. Toews released a statement saying that he has symptoms that have left him feeling drained and lethargic. It is scary stuff and we hope that Toews is okay. Hockey is secondary in a situation like this and he needs to focus on his health before getting back on the ice.

One of Chicago’s reactions to this mess has been the signing of Carl Soderberg to a short-term deal. He is a good bottom-six center but he isn’t even close to Dach or Toews. This team is in trouble before the season even starts. If they can get through the season healthy, have a good pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, and develop some of their young players, it will be as good of a season as possible for them. Hopefully, the bad news stops so this team can get training camp going with no more issues.
