Chicago Bears: 15 possible replacements for Mitchell Trubisky
By Ryan Heckman
4. Chicago Bears’ best replacements for Mitchell Trubisky: Mac Jones
This next year’s quarterback class is one of the most intriguing in recent memory. Obviously, you have Trevor Lawrence who will undoubtedly go number one overall. But, even Justin Fields has had recent question marks. Beyond Fields, there’s still plenty of options for a team like the Bears.
One of the risers this season has been Alabama’s Mac Jones, who now finds himself in the Heisman Trophy race as a 2020 finalist. Speaking of Lawrence, Jones and the Tide taking on Clemson in a National Championship for the ages would be one heck of a way to end the college season.
This year, Jones has thrown for 3,739 yards and 32 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He is not a mobile quarterback by any means, so the Bears would be looking at primarily a pocket passer in Jones. That’s fine, however, because he’s looked every bit like a future pro.
Jones’ biggest strength is his decision-making. The ability to go through reads and make the wisest possible throw is always at the forefront with this kid. He’s safe, for the most part, and that’s perfectly fine. The Bears need a quarterback who can make the right throws while not giving the game away.
If Chicago can fix the tackle position, Jones’ outlook improves big time as a Bear. As stated, he’s not a guy who will use his legs a whole lot. He needs solid protection in front of him. If he gets that, he’ll pick defenses a part finding the open man regularly.
