Chicago Bears: 15 possible replacements for Mitchell Trubisky
By Ryan Heckman
3. Chicago Bears’ best replacements for Mitchell Trubisky: Cam Newton
Back in the spring, Cam Newton was the hottest name amongst potential quarterback additions for the Bears. Even before he was cut, Newton’s name popped up all over the place in connection to Chicago.
After he was cut, a large portion of the fan base wanted the Bears to add him immediately. As it turns out, Chicago could have signed him for next to nothing like the New England Patriots did late in the summer. Now, there are mixed opinions on whether or not Newton would have panned out as a Bear.
Still, his one-year deal with New England is up after this season and the Bears may have another shot to bring him in. If they signed someone like Newton, it would probably be for a similar one-year contract. With Newton and Foles on board, the Bears could then also draft a quarterback and keep three on the roster, similar to the aforementioned Colts.
This year, Newton has not had much to work with in New England. To start with, his back field has been in flux as it typically is in New England. Bill Belichick doesn’t necessarily like to use a workhorse back, but this year, he’s also had most of his backs miss time throughout the season.
Newton’s receiving core is also led by Jakobi Meyers and Damiere Byrd, along with last year’s rookie N’Keal Harry, who has yet to break out.
One could argue Newton’s arsenal in Chicago would be the best he’s ever had, collectively, in terms of pass catchers. Don’t forget, he’s still an effective runner and one of the biggest goal-line threats the league has ever seen.
