Chicago Bears: 15 possible replacements for Mitchell Trubisky
By Ryan Heckman
15. Chicago Bears’ best replacements for Mitchell Trubisky: Sam Darnold
The 2018 third overall pick has had a rough start to his career, but some still believe in Sam Darnold. The New York Jets are the definition of a dysfunctional franchise, and if Adam Gase somehow survives this season, there’s no telling what the quarterback situation will look like next year.
At the moment, the Jets have won two in a row and the Jacksonville Jaguars are locked into the no. 1 overall pick. If the Jets decide to go quarterback, they’ll likely snag Ohio State’s Justin Fields second overall. But, if they do, where does that leave Darnold? Would they choose to move on from Darnold before the draft if they plan to take a quarterback, or use Darnold as a bridge before ultimately moving to Fields?
It’s hard to see the Jets sticking with Gase, and thus sticking with Darnold, going into 2021. The franchise is in need of a major overhaul, starting with the head coach. A new head coach will likely want his quarterback, thus making Darnold expendable.
Now, he’s not the sexiest option for the Bears, but if placed in the right system, maybe he has a future yet. Should Darnold become available via trade, the Bears should do their due diligence and potentially offer a mid-to-late round pick.
