Chicago Bears could be intrigued by one of the draft’s biggest mysteries

One of the draft’s biggest and most intriguing mysteries — at least at the quarterback positions — is Jamie Newman. The former Wake Forest University product transferred to the University of Georgia this offseason. However, the pandemic led him to decide to opt-out of the 2020 season and focus on preparing for the draft.

While the decision is more than understandable, it was nonetheless a disappointment as many, including myself, were very much looking forward to seeing Newman showcase his talents against the rest of the SEC.

While at Wake Forest, he displayed many desirable traits, but still had some flaws he had to work on. He fits the mold of the modern NFL quarterback with mobility to escape pressure and use his legs to pick up yards when the play breaks down. While he is pretty accurate in the short to intermediate range, his deep ball accuracy needs improvement. The good news is he has plenty of arm strength to make the necessary throws. The bad news is, his mechanics need some polish.

Again, the hope was to see whether a year working with the Georgia staff could help. However, we won’t get the chance to see that. The question for the Bears will be whether they think their staff — whoever that may be — can develop a guy like Newman. However, he is definitely worth a shot and could be a draft-day steal.
