Chicago Bears: Insider believes Mitch Trubisky will start vs. Packers
By Ryan Heckman
Who will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears this Sunday night? One insider believes he knows.
Sunday night, the Chicago Bears may be on their last leg in terms of a playoff run in 2020. What started so promising, a 5-1 beginning, has turned for the worse as the 5-5 Bears now sit outside the NFC playoff picture.
Headed for a potential buzz saw in the Green Bay Packers, the downtrodden Bears are looking for something — anything — to spark the offense. While the defense continues to play well as they have all season long, that side of the ball simply needs a little more time to rest as games (and the season) go on.
The Bears are 31st in total offense, and there really hasn’t been a bright spot on that side of the ball. Aside from Allen Robinson performing well when he is targeted, the Bears don’t have much to be excited about offensively, and much of it stems from quarterback play and lack of an offensive line.
Chicago will need some kind of quarterback play on Sunday night to beat Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, who are coming off a loss. This isn’t a position you want to be in if you’re the Bears. Rodgers usually responds well after a loss, and he could put the nail in the coffin of this Bears season on Sunday night.
But, who will be the quarterback for the Bears? Nick Foles had overtaken Mitchell Trubisky earlier in the season, but with Foles’ health in question, he may not be ready to go. Trubisky, on the other hand, is coming back from a shoulder injury he suffered on his only play against the New Orleans Saints a couple of weeks back.
The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs believes he has the answer to the question every fan is asking: Who will start Sunday night?
On Monday, Trubisky was the only quarterback present at practice, which was just a session of stretching. That seemed to give him a slight leg up on Foles, but with the rest of the week’s practice yet to come, we have yet to find out exactly what Matt Nagy’s plan is.
The last time we saw Trubisky against the Packers was Week 15 of 2019, where he completed 29 of 53 passes for 334 yards, one touchdown, two picks and a quarterback rating of 64.5.
If he does indeed get the start, you can’t help but wonder if this benching has done anything to his psyche, whether positive or negative. Trubisky is a guy who has seemed mentally impressionable throughout his career, and this benching may have knocked his confidence down quite a bit. If that’s the case, we’re in for a long game.
On the other hand, maybe he used this as a positive thing. Maybe he’s more motivated than ever before. We could see him come out and use his legs like he did back in 2018, where he was the best version of himself.
Regardless, if Trubisky is the guy, he needs to realize this is a must-win situation for the Bears. Five straight losses would send the Bears into 2021 in a hurry.
