Hiring of Joe Maddon

Every good team needs a good leader. That is exactly what the Cubs had with Joe Maddon. They fired Rick Renteria when Joe Maddon became available because they believed that he was the guy that was going to get them over the edge. He was coming over from the Tampa Bay Rays where he was let go after a nice run there that included an American League pennant. Theo bringing him in is one of his very best moves.

Under Maddon, the Cubs went 471-339 (.581) which is one of the best five year stretches in the history of the franchise. They won the National League Pennant and World Series once under his leadership. He is going to go down as the greatest manager in the history of the Chicago Cubs.

It was sad to see them let Renteria go but it was a fantastic move by Theo. He knew that the team needed a new voice to lead them to the next level and he picked the best possible option in Joe Maddon. This will go down as one of the key pillars in them finally getting over the hump and Theo deserves a lot of credit for it happening.
